Pandemic Photo Shoot

These last few months have been weird. There’s school but it’s all online. We work (both essential workers) but once home we’ve nowhere to go. No after school activities. No concerts. No Booster meetings. No shopping. NO HAIRCUTS. Our governor gave the green light for social distancing photo shoots to take place and we (ok, I) jumped at the chance to document this weird time. You should, too. Here’s why…

It’s a Pandemic

Ok, the last “worldwide” pandemic of this magnitude impacting almost everyone was the influenza virus (Spanish Flu) of 1918.

Since none of us were around in 1918, and hopefully we won’t have another “entire world is closed” pandemic in this lifetime, you might as well document it with the family.

What do you really look like?

Unless you have hair cutting skills, you’re probably all looking a little shaggy. There might even be a bit more touch of gray than you’re used to.

Own it. Photograph it. Cherish it.

Really, when is the next time you’re going to take photos without at least a few family members with freshly cut hair.

Major Milestones

If you’re like our family, this 2020 pandemic is interrupting some major life events. High School graduation? College Graduation? Wedding? Anniversary? Birthday? Preschool or Grade School Celebration?

We’ve hit a few in this family and thankfully we’re able to capture it on film.

Support Local Business

Honestly, this is really one of the top reasons to do this. These artists, small business owners and independent photographers are certainly in a difficult situation.

Thankfully we are still working. While we are watching our own budget as pay-cuts and furloughs are always a possibility, we had the funds to make these photos happen.

Our photos are by Something Blue Design and located in the NW Suburbs of Chicagoland.

Their Facebook page has some samples and even some last-minute openings (we had 2 hours to get ready, so you can easily pull this off with short notice!)

If you’re not in Illinois I’m certain you can easily find a local photographer to capture your pandemic moments!

Great idea!! Much as these are stressful times, it is something significant that everyone will remember. May as well make it a positive memory!

I live in the area, I’m going to check them out. We need family photos, which I was going to put off, but really, why not have professional photos to represent what things were like. Pictures to go with the stories!

My 40th bday was in May. We did a family front lawn photo complete with the masks. It is a moment in time that we wanted to capture…. just as it was. These photos will be part of our family history one day. Great post!

Great idea! We’ve started to have happy hour with our neighbors at the end of the driveway. We’ll have to figure out how to get a photo to document these crazy times!

We had a friend come and take our picture on the porch and I’m so glad we did. I almost told her we weren’t interested, because I didn’t want to take the time to get 4 kids (and myself) dressed and looking presentable just for a 10 minute photo shoot. But it was definitely worth it. I’ll cherish the photos forever. This has definitely been a year to remember.

I gave the kids literally 15 minutes to get ready! Thinking last minute is the way to go!

Despite the shaggy hair, I think it really is the perfect time to get some family photos done. And you’re right, supporting these small businesses/photographers if you can is another pro!

I love your photo shoot! These aren’t the memories we thought we’d be making this year, but they are memories. And someday we will look back and say “Remember the year everything changed…”

I have a couple photographer friends that I’ve seen talk about these. I think it’s a great idea to help small businesses stay in business and it’s something fun to do!
